TerraLog

Privacy Policy

Last updated: July 6, 2026

TerraLog ("TerraLog," "we," "us," or "our") provides an iOS application and companion website that let you post short, location-tagged messages to a shareable map, and request weather and avalanche forecasts, over satellite and cellular SMS. This Privacy Policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, who we share it with, and the choices and rights you have. By using TerraLog, you agree to the practices described here.

1. Information We Collect

TerraLog is designed to work with minimal, purpose-built data collection. We collect the following categories of information, all of which are linked to your identity (typically via your phone number). We do not use any of this data for advertising, do not sell it, and do not share it with data brokers or use it to track you across other companies' apps or websites.

  • Phone number. Used as your account identifier and to send and receive SMS messages (including post confirmations, weather and avalanche forecast replies, and account-related notices).
  • Precise location. Collected when you post a message, so it can be geotagged and displayed at the correct place on your map.
  • User content. The text of the messages you choose to post, which appear on your shareable public map along with their location and timestamp.

We do not collect precise financial account information. Card payments are handled entirely by Stripe (see Section 4); TerraLog never receives or stores your card number.

2. Why We Collect It (App Functionality)

Every category of data listed above is collected solely to make the app work as intended:

  • Your phone number lets us verify your account, deliver your messages over SMS, and confirm delivery back to you.
  • Your location lets us tag your posts so they show up in the right place on your map and lets us return location-relevant weather and avalanche forecasts.
  • Your posted content is displayed on your map so that the people you share it with can follow along.

We do not use any of this information to build advertising profiles, and we do not sell it.

3. Legal Basis and Consent

Where applicable law requires a legal basis for processing, we rely on: performance of our contract with you (delivering the core TerraLog service you signed up for), your consent (for example, SMS consent described below), and our legitimate interest in operating, securing, and improving the service. You may withdraw consent at any time as described in Section 8.

SMS consent. By continuing, you consent to receive SMS messages from TerraLog in order to confirm that messages you've sent were successfully posted. Message and data rates may apply. You can opt out of receiving these messages at any time by replying "STOP" to any SMS message or by contacting [email protected].

4. Third-Party Service Providers

We use a small number of trusted service providers to operate TerraLog. They process data on our behalf, only as needed to provide their service, and are not permitted to use your information for their own purposes such as advertising.

  • Stripe: processes payments for passes via Stripe Checkout, a hosted, PCI-compliant payment page. TerraLog never sees or stores your card number.
  • Twilio: delivers and receives SMS messages and performs phone number verification.
  • Firebase (Google): provides account authentication.
  • PostHog: provides product analytics that help us understand how TerraLog is used and improve it.

5. Data Retention

We retain your account information, posted content, and location data for as long as your account remains active, so that your map and post history remain available to you and the people you've shared them with. If you delete your account (Section 8), we delete or anonymize this data within a reasonable period, except where we are required to retain limited records (for example, billing records) to comply with legal, tax, or accounting obligations.

6. How Your Content Is Shared

Messages you post appear on a map that is shareable by link. Anyone you share that link with can view your posted messages and their locations. Please only post information you're comfortable sharing with people you give the link to.

7. Security

We use commercially reasonable administrative, technical, and physical safeguards designed to protect your information, including encryption of data in transit and restricted access to production systems. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.

8. Your Rights and Choices

You can access, update, or delete your information at any time:

  • Access. You can view your posts and account details in the app or on your map.
  • Deletion. You can delete your account and all associated data, including your posts, passes, and account record, from the app (Settings) or from the web dashboard. Deleting your account permanently removes your posted content from your map and disables further SMS delivery to your number.
  • SMS opt-out. Reply "STOP" to any TerraLog SMS message at any time, or contact us at [email protected].
  • Other requests. Depending on where you live, you may have additional rights to access, correct, port, or restrict the processing of your information. Contact us at [email protected] and we will respond as required by applicable law.

9. Children's Privacy

TerraLog is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, please contact us at [email protected] so we can delete it.

10. US-Only Availability

TerraLog is currently available only to users in the United States, and our SMS and phone verification features are built around US carriers and phone numbers.

11. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. If we make material changes, we'll update the "Last updated" date above and, where appropriate, notify you in the app or by SMS. Continued use of TerraLog after a change becomes effective means you accept the revised policy.

12. Contact Us

If you have questions about this Privacy Policy or how we handle your information, contact us at [email protected].
